Naked Wedding Cake

I have spent many hours talking about the naked wedding cake, plus it is one of my most popular pins on Pinterest.  So some kind soul called Jessica from wayfair has taken pity on me and decided it was time that I was shown how to make a beautiful naked wedding cake, plus many more delicious easy to make wedding cakes.

Wedding cakes are the one area of a wedding where you can save money and add your own personal touch to your wedding day by doing it yourself. Forget about the bakery or cake shop, with a little practice some of these DIY wedding cakes can easily be created.  I believe wedding cakes can easily join the party of home-mades from  centrepieces to wedding invitations, just to mention a few.

Below are several DIY wedding cake ideas to serve your wedding guests with a direct link to the full recipe and instructions.  These cakes can easily be adapted to serve a larger wedding guest list, or just create several cakes, either the same or different, to give your guests a choice.

Starting with my favourite naked wedding cake, a wedding cake minus the thick white icing is perfect for those guests who really dislike icing.  It is a simple layered cake in a flavour to suit. This one is chocolate, but there is no reason why you can’t have citrus flavour or vanilla flavoured cakes, or even a mix. Each layer is filled with thick fluffy white butter cream and stacked on top of each other. This cake is finished off with a top layer of butter cream and decorated with silk flowers, though fresh flowers, ribbons, flags or whatever fits the wedding detail can be used for decor.  Just pop the cake on a slightly larger sized cake stand and it is ready for any wedding cake table. To add a bit of interest two sizes of cake have been used, but I think even three sizes of cake would look good; a square shape could be used in place of a circular cake or even a different shape, lots of options.  For full details and step by step instructions see the Peek-a-boo Layer Wedding Cake

Strawberry cupcake

If large cakes are not your thing then  cupcakes may be the perfect alternative and they can be made in lots of different flavours and toppings, I just love Peggy’s strawberry & champagne cupcake from the Peggy Porschen range. It is my special treat every time I visit London, plus the shop is a  true inspiration for me. If you want to try to make these divine cupcakes here is a link to Peggy’s blog post for the full recipe and instructions – PEGGY’S STRAWBERRY & CHAMPAGNE CUPCAKE RECIPE.  Plus, while you are there do take a peep at Peggy’s latest FLORAL WEDDING CAKE COLLECTION for more wedding inspiration.

Traditional wedding cake

If you are more of a traditionalist then the cake for you is the traditional three  tiered fruit cake with white fondant icing and decorated in your own wedding colours. The best thing about making a fruit cake is that it can be made well in advance of your wedding day.   The BBC have a fabulous recipe and instructions for a 3 tiered wedding cake, including icing and decor, so just pop over for full details – Traditional Wedding Cake.

Wedding tiered Cheesecakes

For  me  a cheesecake is a great choice, and this 5 tiered cheese cake from One Hand in the Cookie Jar looks just delicious and perfect for a wedding alternative cake.  There is an easy no baking recipe for a raspberry and chocolate cheese cake with instructions available from One Hand In the Cookie Jar.  If it is too daunting to make then The Cheesecake Company has been recommended as one of the best cheesecakes suppliers around.

Pork Pie wedding cake

At one of the very first weddings I organised, the groom asked for a pork pie wedding cake, which I thought was very odd at the time, but it appears that now it is one of the great alternative wedding cakes, so if all else fails just go to your local butchers or you can order this  splendid pork pie cake online from  Wilson’s Butchers in Leeds, the multi-award winning pork pie butchers.

What ever you choose it will  definitely be a true wedding centrepiece.
